How to Write a Love Note Like the Pros

Creating great love letters, like all works of literary genius, often seems like a daunting task that is only achievable by hopeless romantics who spend their days dreaming of knights in shining armor. So for many of us, emotional and touching prose doesn’t come naturally (even our editorial staff will agree to that!)

But the good news is that your knight probably prefers wearing denim to armor, so you’ll be looking for a more authentic way to express your feelings. Enter American Greetings creative director Rochelle Lulow, who has spent countless hours researching relationships and the modern language of love to create the greeting card company’s newest line of romance cards.

Here are Lulow’s top-notch tips to writing a love letter that will be truly reflective of your relationship, and one that your special someone will be sure to cherish forever.

Set the mood:

  • Try playing some music that reminds you of your loved one or a special occasion you’ve shared.
  • Think back to the days when you knew you were falling for them, or important milestones in your life together, focusing not only on the event, but how it made you feel.
  • If you need some help walking down memory lane, try revisiting old photo albums and looking through keepsakes.

Don’t be afraid, just dive in:

  • Create a list of descriptive words, attributes and personality quirks that you love about your significant other. These words will serve as a handy reference guide for curing writer’s block.
  • Don’t worry about starting off perfectly; just write a few simple sentences to describe your loved one, how grateful you are for them, and everything that you love about them.
  • Just remember - No masterpiece was written on the first try, so don’t get frustrated. It took Shakespeare several years to write Romeo and Juliet, so spending a little time on something your loved one will cherish for years doesn’t seem so bad in comparison, now does it?

Special touches:

  • When your final version is ready, select a nice black pen (no blues, reds, or crazy colors) and some beautiful stationery.
  • Take the time to write out your thoughts carefully. Don’t rush!
  • Create a custom signature – rather than a simple “Love, Me,” try something a little more memorable such as “Forever your devoted sweetheart,” or, “Always and endlessly in love with you.”
