My Best Mother’s Day
Every year we try to make Mother’s Day special for all of the fabulous moms in our lives. But what makes a great Mother’s Day—A special gift? An elaborate meal? A heartfelt letter?
We asked some of our moms here at American Greetings which Mother’s Day was the most memorable for them and what made it so special. Some of their stories will surprise you—and hopefully inspire you to make every holiday (and every day, for that matter) more meaningful.
“My first Mother’s Day we ended up in the emergency room--my son had a terrible fever. Being the new mother I was, of course, terrified he was going to die. They treated him and sent us home and I remember sitting in the rocker that night, holding this baby (who was finally sleeping peacefully) in my arms and thinking, ‘This Is the best Mother’s Day present ever.’ I never wanted to forget how lucky I was.” – Sheila C, Music
“When I was a little girl, my siblings and I scraped together enough money to buy our mom a Madonna planter from the florist. She was so pleased with it that she cried happy tears. Last year, my daughter gave me a beautiful card and told me to look outside for my gift. Hanging from hooks were the most beautiful potted plants. It reminded me of the planter I gave to my mom.” – Colleen P, Creative Administration
“I hosted a christening party for my youngest brother’s new baby, since they lived out of state and the majority of the family lived here. This was the last grandchild of the family and it worked out to be celebrated on Mother’s Day. How happy my mom was to have all of her children and grandchildren with her in one place on one day! There were few times after this that everyone would be together again for a celebration.” – Karen D, ISD
“For my first Mother’s Day, I had two month old twin girls and as you can imagine, I was extremely sleep-deprived! One of the gifts from my husband that year was to do the entire nighttime shift with the babies by himself, allowing me to get a full night’s sleep in the finished basement. That was the most wonderful sleep ever… what a luxury and what a thoughtful gift!!” – Tracy M, Pricing
“A homemade cookie jar with all of my grandchildren’s hand prints on it. A very moving card from my daughter telling me how she understands how difficult being a mom is… and now appreciates everything I did for her.” – Linda M, Alternative Cards
