The Day You Discovered You’re Just Like Your Mother

“Wear a sweater!” “You get what you get and you don’t get upset!” There are so many catch phrases and little quirks that mom always said. Sometimes they were loving reminders and sometimes they drove us a little crazy. Either way, we often discover that mother knows best after all and find ourselves repeating these same phrases later on in life.

Here are some moments when our own American Greetings associates found themselves that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree after all.

“During my college years was when I really realized I was starting to act just like my mom. I’ve always looked exactly like her but I started to act like her, talk like her, and think like her. But I think my mom is the greatest person in the world, so I feel honored to be just like her!” – Kelly C, Creative Products

“I freaked out when my son didn’t call home when he was supposed to and suddenly I was channeling my mother saying, ‘You could’ve been dead in a ditch somewhere!’ Why a ditch? I have no idea, but there it was!” – Sheila C, Music

“A couple of years ago, I had a friend in a pretty bad spot and I used my mother’s phrase, ‘If you keep looking back, you will never see what’s in front of you’ in order to get him to keep going rather than looking back.” – Joshua B, ISD

“My mother used to use the expression, ‘You are driving me batty.’ I didn’t realize how funny it was until I told my son this one day when he was being very giggle and goofy. He of course then asked if bats drive.” – Melissa M, MP&A

“I have a brother who is mentally handicapped from birth. My mother has been his guardian most of his life, standing by his side, fighting for his rights, bringing him home to spend time with his family, making sure he gets the best care possible… Something I’m sure her other children (myself included) did not know how to appreciate. Due to her age, it became harder and harder for her to go to his meetings, doctor’s appointments, etc. so I became my brother’s guardian about 4 years ago, to be her ears and voice for him. It wasn’t until I did this that I realized I was doing something like my mom and began to see the intensity of my mother’s devotion and how beautiful her relationship is with him and her entire family. I am so humbled by this experience and I cherish every moment I share with my mother and brother—every smile, laugh and tear.” – Michelle K, Tax
