How going green can help you to get healthy

(February 2011) – Becoming a little more environmentally conscious has personal benefits in addition to the great feeling of doing something positive for your world. One of the best parts of living a more sustainable lifestyle is the sustainability it offers us in terms of health.

There are many ways to incorporate a healthier diet as well as more responsible environmental decisions into our lifestyle. Here are just a few examples.

  • Plan ahead: When you’re heading to the grocery store, go with a plan in mind. Have recipes with you and look for the healthiest and most sustainable options available. Starting off with a clear idea of what you’re looking for will lower your risk of impulse shopping, and allow you to be even more careful in your decision making

  • Avoid the process: Processed foods are often times quick and easy, but they’re also often among the worst for us and those with the highest level of waste. One simple rule of thumb: the less packaging it has the healthier it is for you and the better it is for the earth.

  • Eat in season: It can be a little more challenging to always seek out fresh goods, but it also has many benefits. Seek out sections in your grocery store featuring products purchased from local purveyors.

  • Look for free: When possible, choose free-range, hormone-free and organic animal products when purchasing meat, poultry, eggs and dairy. These products come from animals that have not been treated with antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic farmers also take extra care to minimize disease in their animals. By buying these goods you show your support for the responsible practices, and end up with safer, more nutritious items.

  • Don’t skip your vegetables: Of course you need a balanced diet, but by upping your vegetable intake you can gain vitamins and minerals you are likely missing out on, while reducing your consumption of meat, poultry and seafood.

There are just a few of the ways that you can incorporate healthier and more environmentally friendly decisions into your diet. Do you have any tips for us? Let us know on Facebook.
