Fall Wedding Ideas: Tasty Twists on the Traditional Cake

(September 2011) – Weddings are one of the most special and memorable times in a person’s life. From the dress and the décor, to the music played and the food served, a wedding is not only a representation of two people in love, but a demonstration of their style and creativity as well. And for those planning fall weddings (and we know there are many of you as September and October are now the two most popular months for ceremonies) the autumn offers wonderful options to personalize any aspect of your special day.

Here are some creative ways to ensure a cake that complements your theme and, most importantly, satisfies your taste.

  • Forget the Traditional: Instead of choosing traditional white cake consider a more festive flavor, perhaps pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting, spice cake with a berry filling or lemon almond cake. If these flavors are too bold for your liking, consider adding a pinch of fall with autumn colored icing trimming or accents like sugar maple leaves.

  • Autumn Accents: Add orange, yellow and red roses, or crab apples and pears to decorate the wedding cake. The addition of the fruit enhances the autumn feel and elegance of the presentation.

  • Keep it Classic. . .with a Twist: If you have your heart set on a traditional wedding flavor and design you can still tie it in your autumn theme. Serve your cake a la mode with pumpkin ice cream, or pair it with a sweet side like poached pears, candied apples or caramel candy.

  • Have your Cake and Eat it Too: In addition to your wedding cake or a dessert bar, have pie selections. Serve apple, cherry, blueberry, pumpkin…any type of pie you like! These flavors are heavily associated with the fall and the ingredients will be fresh and delicious this time of year.

  • Cocoa Collection: Is chocolate cake your favorite? Indulge and take advantage of the rich deep brown color of chocolate icing beautifully offset with other fall colors. In addition to giving your cake a gorgeous look, chocolate is a perfect complement to autumn flavors such as apple and pear.
