Beauty In Distinction: A Group Show

Zygote Press

Founded in 1996, Zygote Press is an artist workshop promoting contemporary fine-art printmaking in Cleveland, Ohio. Through advocacy, exhibitions, community outreach, and an affordable, green workspace, Zygote stimulates collective exchange.

The strong stable of mid-career and emerging artists whose work is collected here offers a range of traditional and alternative techniques that demonstrate the myriad of effects and styles that printmaking can offer.

Many of these artists have received regional and national awards and are featured in local, national, and international collections, including the Progressive Arts Collection, The Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospitals.

At Zygote, artists create new work, audiences explore new ideas, and collaborations strengthen our community.

Mark Hartung

Mark Hartung received his BFA from Kent State University in1982. After seven successful years as a glass artist, he began to focus his work on copper and steel, as well as other materials such as wood, found objects, color pencils and patinas.

“It has been my preference to explore my work through basic means of production. The images presented in my work are derived from objects I encounter and collect, lyrics in music, my life and personal history. The work is often a collage from fragments of all of the above.”

Jim Baker

A self-taught artist from Avon, Ohio, Baker works in metal and wood, creating large, abstract, non-functional sculptures. The self-proclaimed “chronic tinkerer” and “ultimate tool freak” fabricates wood and contorted raw steel, then relies on the elements to add a gritty natural blanket of patina and rust.

“When I’m making these sculptures, I’m forming what’s coming out of me at the time. Everything’s different. Everything’s raw.”
